Portaits of a convicted spy - Arne Treholt
Arne Treholt was a Norwegian politician and diplomat who was convicted of espionage on behalf of the Soviet Union and Iraq in 1985. The case remains controversial, with many believing that Treholt was wrongly convicted. He died on February 12, 2023, in Moscow, Russia. He was 80 years old.
He is one of the faces I remember most vividly from the news broadcasts of my childhood. He was everywhere. Everyone had an opinion about him. It’s a peculiar experience to meet such a person so many years later -for a while it was just the two of us and a weary hotel. Over the course of this session, I encountered a warm, grandfatherly figure. But I also met an angry and intense man who almost seemed intimidating. He carried a profound sense of injustice. Whether that feeling was justified isn’t for me to judge.
